Major General (retired) John Borling will be speaking at Quincy University's Hall of Fame Room (S entrance door to the gymnasium at 18th and Oak) on Wednesday, May 1, at 7:00 p.m. This event is free of charge and open to the public. He will speak for 20-30 minutes then have Q & A afterwards followed by a book sale and signing.

John was shot down over North Vietnam in 1966 and was a POW in the "Hanoi Hilton" POW camp for almost 7 years. He was MIA for the first 3 1/2 of those years. He was released in February 1973 when the war ended.

While incarcerated John, like others, fought to maintain his strength mentally and physically. In order to defeat what he called the "biggest enemy", time, John composed poetry then tapped it letter-by-letter on the walls of his cell using the special alphabetic code unique to the military. John had no pen or paper, so the effort of composing and memorizing the words became a way to occupy the mind not only for John but also for others as the poems were tapped from one cell to another. To do so invoked danger as communication between prisoners was not allowed.

When the Vietnam POW prisoners were released in 1973 and taken to the Philippines for debriefing, etc., John first called his wife then obtained a tape recorder to record his poems. Those poems have now been published by Pritzker, the military printing company. Taps on the Walls takes its readers into the cells of the Hanoi Hilton and into the mind of a 24-31 year old Lieutenant who survived! The book isn't written "about" his incarceration - it's actually a record of his efforts while he was there. It's amazing to see his experiences from that perspective. Reading the book is like being on the other side of the wall of John's cell.

What amazes me most is that Taps on the Walls is not full of despair. Much of it expresses John's love of his country and his love of flying. Some of it, of course, deals with "dark moments", but John is a very positive, articulate man with an energetic spirit that believes one should "keep marching". He has lived out that philosophy.

NAUVOO, IL- The Nauvoo Veteran’s Memorial, a new addition to the Nauvoo landscape, will be dedicated with a service on Memorial Day, May 27, 2013 at 10 a.m. at the Stone Arched Bridge pull-off from Highway 96 on the South edge of Nauvoo. The Nauvoo Veteran’s Memorial is the result of an Eagle Scout project and the hard work of the American Legion Post 711.

Immediately following the dedication ceremony, the Nauvoo Betterment Association will host a Community Picnic to honor our veterans and to celebrate community spirit. The Community Picnic will be serving pulled pork sandwiches, hot dogs, baked beans, chips, water and lemonade from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Soda will be available through the Cub Scouts. The Community Picnic will be held in the Nauvoo City Park, located on Bluff and Knight Streets in Uptown Nauvoo. The cost of the meal is a free will donation and everyone is welcome. Entertainment will also be provided by the Warsaw High School Jazz Band, Joni Wilson and Lynn Strnad.

A bus will be available at the Nauvoo City Park for those needing a ride to the dedication of the Nauvoo Veteran’s Memorial. This bus will return to the Nauvoo City Park immediately following the dedication ceremony. Additional parking is available at the Community of Christ church parking lot, north of the dedication site. In case of rain, all events will be held at the Nauvoo-Colusa Elementary School Gym.
