Memorial Day Eve commemoration, Sunset on the Sacred Grounds of Woodland Cemeter

Description: The Friends of Historic Woodland Cemetery and the Historical Society of Quincy and Adams County are cosponsoring a Memorial Day Eve program entitled Sunset on the Sacred Grounds of Woodland Cemetery on Sunday, May 25th. The commemoration will begin at 7 pm with a lineup of cars to form a motorcade parade at Clat Adams Bicentennial Park at Front and Hampshire that will follow Front Street to Jefferson Street and on to the cemetery at 1020 So. 5th Street. At the cemetery entrance visitors in the motorcade will receive a program and an LED candle for the sunset ceremony. Car parking in the cemetery will be directed by volunteers.
The cemetery will be closed to traffic until the arrival of the motorcade.
The ecumenical service starting at 7:30 pm at the Soldiers’ Monument will include bagpipe music as well as other musical selections, presentations to mark Memorial Day and a Native American sacred ceremony. The sacred ceremony will honor the Native American heritage incorporated in the cemetery and prevalent in the Mississippi Valley. The program will conclude at sunset with the lighting of the LED candles.
In the event of inclement weather the Mausoleum will be used for the program.
